Miscellaney
*I'm a fan, I am, but really, what the hell is the difference between Overheard in New York and New York, Overheard? Is this really necessary? [via]

*After reading Curious Incident last year, I could identify with the autistic experience of not being able to read other people very well. I admitted to a friend recently that I sometimes do it on purpose, demand that others be literal in order to be understood. I'll stubbornly refuse to read between their lines because I see that kind of communication as manipulative and passive-aggressive. On this “Autism-Spectrum Quotient” test, the mean score in the control group was 16.4. I got a 31.

*Speaking of tests, between April 1996 and April 2006, my purity score has dropped 61%. Good times.

*What I've printed out to read on the subway home tonight: The Worst President in History?

*It's hard to listen to a British radio station, midday, and hear, "Monday's over! Enjoy your evening." :(

The God Who Wasn't There
Ironically, I watched The God Who Wasn't There, by Brian Flemming, this Easter weekend. It was disappointingly short (:52 runtime), but there were hours of extra features that made up for that deficit, including a commentary track with interviews with Richard Dawkins and The Raving Atheist.

A remark I loved was in a special feature interview with Richard Carrier, who was also interviewed in the movie. He had an excellent response to the anthropic principle, a response based on the work of Lee Smolin. To those who say the universe is "fine-tuned" for human life (which they use as evidence of a Creator or Designer), Smolin makes the point that 99.9% of the universe is "lethal to life," says Carrier. However, 99.9% of the matter in the universe does go into the production of black holes, and there isn't a universe that could exist that would create more black holes than this one. This universe is a "perfect black hole generator," a side effect of which includes occasional spots of life. Carrier goes on to say more interesting stuf about the human brain, the "soul," and the structure of the universe, so if you rent this DVD, be sure to check it out.

Other stuff I want to read or read about after seeing this DVD:
*Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism and Why I Am Not a Christian by Richard Carrier
*RaptureLetters.com
*Why I'm Not a Muslim by Ibn Warraq
*The Selfish Gene (which I've been meaning to read for a long time) and A Devil's Chaplin by Richard Dawkins
*"The God gene"
*Moral Darwinism by Benjamin Wiker (called a modern Mein Kampf on a commentary track)
*Dawkins commented that Ronald Reagan once said that we shouldn't bother to conserve California Redwoods because, by the time the last one is felled, we will have reached the Second Coming of Christ. (I've found quotes from him about the Second Coming and redwoods, but not togther.)

Flemming's next film, The Beast, premieres on 6.6.06.

Science and Math I've Absorbed Recently:
*Alpha and Omega : The Search for the Beginning and End of the Universe and Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife
*The Golden Ratio: The Story of PHI, the World's Most Astonishing Number by Mario Livio
*Science and Faith and Universe: One or Many? at the American Museum of Natural History
*And today I'm going to see Bodies: The Exhibition, which I like to call "the ghetto Body Worlds"

Texas Ranch House
Texas Ranch House will air on PBS May 1-4. [via]

This topic doesn't sound as interesting as some of the others (Frontier House, Colonial House, 1900 House, 1940s House, Manor House).

But, if there's a hottie on the ranch, I'll be happy.

A Real Fight Club
Back when I signed up for the Settlers Meetup group, I signed up for a few others that weren't actually meeting but sounded interesting. When an organizer took it over, I'd be notified and given the opportunity to attend the group's get-togethers.

Today I got this email.
Good news! A new group for Fight Club Fans just started. Here are some details:

The Organizer: Irv
The Meetup Group: The New York Fight Club Meetup Group
Fun! But, what does a Fight Club Fans group do?
Meet other Fight Club fighters and Tyler Durden fans. Attend local fights such as boxing, muay thai, UFC. Fight Club Rules: Members may fight one on one outside of the Group at a gym that has proper gear, facilities and insurance.
Though I'm thankful to have my insurance, this isn't quite what I had in mind.

*Fight Club Jr.

UPDATE:
Friend: What's the first rule of the Fight Club Fans club?
Me: Don't blog about Fight Club? :(

"T-shirt Reconstruction Has Become the New Knitting"
Little did we know that I am part of a growing trend:
It seems that t-shirt reconstruction has become the new knitting as a crop of books on the subject are hitting store shelves just in time for fairer skies. Titles such as Tease, Generation T, and Rip IT, are all chock full of ways to turn that over-sized concert tee into a something useable.
*My over-sized concert tee: The Urge: Before & After
*More Sewing Projects
*ReadyMade Blog [via]

And speaking of being two seconds ahead of the curve, two people mentioned to me that they recognized my handbag in the New York Times before I got a chance to read the article myself.

March by the Numbers coming up soon!

How Stupid I Am, Part 2
I walked through the vestibule of a restaurant with three friends.

Dude Friend: "Whoa."
Me: "What?"
Dude Friend: "Was that some checking-out I just saw?"
Me: "What?"
Dude Friend: "Those guys that just walked out. They were checking you out."
Me: "Really? What guys?"

I swear to you, I didn't even register that any guys had just walked past us in the vestibule.

Clearly, we're dealing with a serious problem. If this happens again, I'm going to have to hire a Mating Tutor™ to follow me around and smack me over the head occasionally.

I think this needs to be escalated to the proper authorities. ...

Who would that be?
