Long voicemail greetings drive me a little batty. Call it a pet peeve. I don't need instructions on how to leave a message. And thanks for thanking me for calling and everything, but really, just let me tell you a funny story or let you know that we're still on for Friday night.
On top of that, they're often lengthened by some kind of standardized message from the phone provider. "After the tone, please leave a message. When you have finished recording, please hang up or press 1 for more options." You know what I'm talking about.
So, in line with the whole "do unto others" philosophy, I offer a short greeting.
"Hi, this is Caryn. Leave me a message."
Short. Sweet. Nothing to it.
And
of courseit's inspired by a movie:
Swingers.
Do you remember the scene? Jon Favreau's character Mike has gotten a woman's phone number. He calls Nikki back the same night he meets her. His message is cut off and he calls back. And calls back. ... And calls back. And on and on.
The scene works because Nikki's greeting is so short that Mike's dialogue can keep moving along without having to wait 60+ seconds before gushing out another ridiculous message for this virtual stranger.
That short greeting?
"Hi, this is Nikki. Leave a message."
Too bad Mikey didn't didn't have the choice of pressing 1 for more options. Might have saved him a nervous breakdown.
